FIG BILBAO - doubting evolution

doubting evolution - Del Paleolítico a nuestros días... (english translation below spanish version)

Este trabajo empezó a gestarse cuando un cierto día, no hace mucho…, vi la enciclopedia de Historia del Arte, ahí estaba, en uno de los estantes de mi pequeña biblioteca, realmente con cara de aburrida…las nuevas tecnologías, las prisas diarias, y la falta de tiempo libre la habían relegado a ser casi un “objeto decorativo”.

Alargué la mano con el firme propósito de reparar el daño de haberla dado ese estatus ofensivo, y cada día leer al menos 10 o 20 páginas….(idea peregrina y bastante ilusa, sabiendo el ritmo de mi día a día, y mi facilidad para irme por las ramas cuando algo “llama mi atención”… pero la intención en aquel momento, era sincera).

Y lógicamente mi viaje por la Historia del Arte, comenzó en ese momento en que el hombre siente la necesidad de buscar materiales, que permitan que sus creaciones perduren…en un principio sólo con la intención de que les acompañen en su quehacer diario, interpolando utilidad y belleza; y un poco más adelante, plasmándolo en paredes que le otorgarían perdurabilidad.

Así que allí estaba yo, en pleno Paleolítico…descubriendo la habilidad para tallar de un ser humano hace unos 40.000 años a.c., e intuyendo su necesidad de crear, de adornar…en definitiva de ir moldeando la palabra Arte.

Pasando aquellas páginas, las imágenes me iban provocando un pensamiento paralelo…en ciertos aspectos, no son tan diferentes los comportamientos de entonces y los de nuestros días…a veces, incluso puede parecer que hubiéramos retrocedido en vez de avanzar, a pesar del tiempo transcurrido.

El ser humano se presupone que tiene una capacidad innata para aprender…pero realmente empezaba a invadirme la duda, de si aprendemos lo correcto con el paso de los años.

Ya estaba sembrado el germen de “doubting evolution”.

doubting evolution – From the Palaeolithic to the present day ....

This work began to take form when one day, not so long ago... I saw the encyclopedia of art history, there she was, on one of the shelves of my small library, she seemed to be really boring ... new technologies, the daily rush, and lack of free time had relegated her to being almost a "decorative object".

I reached out with the firm intention to repair the damage of having given to her those offensive "status", and I decided that each day, I will read at least 10 or 20 pages.... (a quite illusory idea, knowing the rhythm of my day, and my facility to go around the bush when something "catches my eye"... but the intention in that moment, was sincere).

And of course my journey through art history, began at that moment when the man feels the need to seek materials that allow that their creations development endures... at first only with the intention of going with them in their daily work, by combining utility  and beauty; and a little bit later, capturing those creations in walls that would grant more durability.

So there I was, in the Palaeolithic... discovering the ability of the human being of carving artworks, some 40,000 years BC, and feeling his need to create, decorate... and definitely trying to shape the word "Art".

Turning those pages, the images were causing to me a parallel thought ... in some ways, the behaviours from those ancient times  are not so different  to the  behaviours of the present day ... sometimes seems that we have moved backwards instead of progress, despite the time elapsed .

The human being is assumed to have an innate ability to learn... but the doubt really began to invade me, if we are able to learn the right thing over times.

With this, the seeds of "doubting evolution" were  sown.
